The '13 Prospects of Christmas- #11- Jonathan Villar

by Jared Webb @weberroo11
#11 Jonathan Villar S/R SS 6'1" 195 21 yrs old

I know some people have soured on Villar since he lost that fight with a door.  However, I still have him as a very legit SS prospect based on the fact that toolsy shorstops are incredibly rare.  Villar is a switch hitter who has some pop and shows off really good speed.  As a hitter, he is much better from the right side of the plate.  He tends to slash a little from the left side, but it's a work in progress.  He shows flashes of being a plus defender if he can clean up the sloppy errors.  Hitting is what will dictate Villar's future.  If he can hit in the majors, he will be an Astros SS for a long time.

Ceiling- Above average everyday starter
 Floor- 2nd String Shortstop

Jonathan does have potential. He has to work on his sloppy errors which he makes. I've seen him the last two seasons at Whataburger Field and some of the throws that he makes are highly questionable. He also has to work on his anger management issues. The games where he broke his hand was a shining example. It was a game that we were ahead in and he decides that since he struck out he needed to punch a door. Was he not happy with the lead-off homer that he had to start the game?
